CBD, a cannabinoid found in hemp, works intrinsically with the Endocannabinoid System, or the ECS, which is found in all vertebrates. The main function of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis in the body. This system is comprised of cannabinoid receptors, our own internally produced endocannabinoids, and the enzymes that break them down. The ECS works closely with many systems and functions of the body, including but not limited to inflammatory response, stress response, sleep, digestion, hormonal balance, temperature regulation, and nervous system support.
CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the ECS. CB1 receptors are found mainly in the brain and the nervous system, while CB2 receptors are found in the immune system and other organs in the body. Cannabidiol can facilitate overall systemic balance through these receptors. We can support this system by supplementing with phytocannabinoids, or cannabinoids found in hemp plants.
When taken internally, CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS) via CB1 and CB2 receptors found throughout the body. CBD works to fuel the ECS and restore homeostasis, regardless of internal or external stressors. CBD oils are best utilized when taken sublingually, or held under the tongue, in order to absorb quickly through the blood vessels in the mouth. CBD gummies are ingested, digested, and processed through the liver, making their time of onset slightly longer, but resulting in a more extended release supplement.
Full Spectrum refers to hemp extract that contains CBD with all other components of the hemp plant, including plant sterols, fatty acids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other cannabinoids. Full Spectrum extract also contains the trace amounts of THC found in hemp plants.
Broad Spectrum refers to extract that contains all compounds of the hemp plant, however, the THC has been removed to untraceable levels, rendering a holistic yet THC-Free product.
The term Isolate, when used in reference to CBD, describes the isolation of only the CBD molecule. This process results in a pure and potent substance. CBD isolate “works well with others” and can be used to increase the CBD concentration of your full or broad-spectrum CBD products.
Our skin’s layers also contain vital components of the ECS, which works to balance critical functions related to skin health. When applied topically, CBD absorbs through the skin and works directly with the receptors of our endocannabinoid system to alleviate pain, discomfort, and inflammation in that localized area, both above and below the skin’s surface.
